Have you ever been to curlfest? If so I hope your experience is worth talking about like mine was this year. For those who are unaware, curlfest is a natural hair care event that is thrown every year in celebration of black and brown women’s natural curls. During the event you get access to natural hair care products that are sometimes more than half off. I left with two conditioners, two shampoos, two oils and each of them were only $5!!! Curlfest is any curly girl’s dream! It amazes me how excited black and brown women get over hair care products. I love witnessing the joy and happiness it exudes.
The force behind this event, is Curly Girl Collective. The women behind this brand are truly doing some amazing things. I admire how much time, dedication, and effort they put into cultivating this brand. There mission is to normalize natural hair and uplift black and brown women who feel their natural hair is inadequate in today’s society. Just recently New York and the state of California passed a law that banned employers from choosing to not hire someone because of the hair that grows out of their head. This law was just passed in 2019, 2019!!! How sad is that? Women are able to feel beautiful and carefree because of organizations like Curly Girl Collective. We feel seen and we also feel heard. The experience is just one you would have to experience yourself.
The venue was filled with such positive spirits and culture. When you’re often the only one throughout a lot of the spaces you’re in, it feels good to be seen and feel heard in a society that tries to mute your MAGIC. That’s why curlfest is such an important event. It Reminds of the line FUBU, because it’s truly in it’s finest sense, “For us by us” It’s always a great feeling speaking to another curly girl about the different products they use. This serves as my second year down with the curly girl collective. The first year attending was a great learning experience. Such a great experience that I want to share some tips with you all on what not to do! I hope after reading this you’ll be itching to follow their Instagram and stay up to date on all things from the Curly Girl Collective.
Below I developed a list of 6 tips to keep in mind when attending curlfest. If you did attend curlfest, I’d love to hear your feedback about the event! Let’s spread the word about curlfest! It’s truly all that it’s hyped up to be!
Tip 1-Arrive Early
This is one event you want to be ON TIME for. If you want access to the natural hair care vendors without dealing with the two hour lines, get there 40 minutes to an hour before check in. There will already be a line before the check in time. You’re better off getting their early to ensure a smooth entry and access to all the amazing product. By Getting their early, you will avoid waiting in long lines for product. Since they have such amazing deals, the lines get very long. You don’t want to be that person waiting in a long line in the steaming hot sun; you want to be miss early bird who beats the crowds and gets their product(s)!
Tip 2- Bring Blankets, Coolers
Man Listen. You need to bring a big enough bag with you that can store a blanket or sheet. Last year they gave out bags with blankets in them to different tiered tickets because they knew people would need them. The venues are always on an open grass field with limited seating options. Blankets will become your best friend at curlfest. Find a nice tree and hold that spot. The shaded areas are the best areas to feel a nice breeze.
Tip 3-Drink lots of H2O
During curlfest, they sell lots of food and alcohol. One thing you’re going to want to ALWAYS keep in your arsenal is water water water! Curlfest ususally happens toward the end of summer and it usually always hot as hell the end of July. The sun is not that friendly. We need our Vitamin D, but make sure you drinking water and keeping yourself hydated.
Tip 4- Bring Comfortable Shoes
You’re going to be doing a lot of walking. Bring a pair of flats you’re comfortable walking in. I highly recommend you not wear anything with a heel, you’ll thank me later!
Tip 5-Bring some chic shades
This is also another staple you want to keep in your arsenal. More than likely when you attend that sun will be beaming! If you tend to be sensitive to natural sunlight, you don’t want to leave the house without them. Plus why wouldn’t you want to wear a chic pair of sunglasses? Curlfest is the time to be creative with your outfits!
Tip 6: Leave the attitudes at home! We want positive Vibes
Leave negative nancy at home! We only want positive vibes over here. Curlfest is such a positive event, why come to the event angry, complaining and upset. You’re only going to create negative energy and influence the people around you with that energy.
Well that is my round about of my experience and the 6 tips to keep in mind when attending curlfest! For those who went, I’d love to hear your feedback as well! Lets continue to spread the word about curlfest. If you’re itching to see which products I scored for more than half off, follow my IG at dayloustyles__. See you there!
